Methods to learn Perl

Perl (and other) programmers are asked regularly (mostly by beginners) what is the best way to start learning Perl (or another programming language). When asking around, it turns out that there's no such thing as the single best way.

Some of the methods that are mentioned:

  • One group of programmers insists on books and journals.
  • Another group claims joining user communities is the best way.
  • Yet another group promotes playing with scripts and programs.
  • Others cannot be convinced that there's anything better than a course given by an expert or a (private) tutor.
I can't tell you what is best. When and if one method does not lead you to success, try another method. At least one method should help you to learn Perl, even when it is just a little bit of Perl.
