Whatever way you learn Perl, it is a waste of time and energy to learn Perl (for instance in an introductory course), maybe even take some advanced classes, and than not use Perl, but instead do a lot of other things for months and months, like holidays, other courses, or non-Perl-related work. That's the best way to forget all you just learned.
